The challenge of this project was to design three magazine spreads about a well-known graphic designer. More specifically, the goal was to find a unique way to reference the designer’s style and personality without copying his exact style. Chip Kidd is a natural comedian and uses humor in his work. I referenced his witty character on the opening spread by placing him where the letter i should be.
Process
I began sketching and experimenting with various layouts, and tested different type and image placements, along with varied column widths. I then made physical mockups and cut and pasted the headings, text, and images onto gridded thumbnails in order to see which layouts looked best in terms of organization and
negative space.
